Meet the Vochol

In Mexico, the Volkswagon Beetle is affectionately called a Vocho. When the Huichol people, well known for their intricate beadwork patterns, use a Beetle as their canvas, the resulting work is named Vochol. This beauty wheeled into the museum about a month ago, and will leave us next week. It's touring then will be auctioned off, raising funds for the community and arts organizations in Mexico. Oh, if only we could keep it!

Yes, those are tiny seed beads, more than 2.2 million of them! Two families spent more than 9,000 hours decorating this car. The beads weigh more than 200 pounds, and the resin adhesive adds another 35. There are beautiful symbols from the culture (deer, corn, snakes, two-headed eagles), slogans about the revolution, and stunning patterns. Yes, beading includes the hubcaps, the steering wheel, the seat cushions..... Gorgeous!
